La Lagune — Dakhla's Safest Beginner Kitesurfing Spot

La Lagune — Dakhla's Safest Beginner Kitesurfing Spot
Flat Water Beginners Year-Round

La Lagune is where every kitesurfing journey in Dakhla begins. Sitting right next to Speed Spot on the lagoon, roughly 25 kilometers south of town, this area offers something remarkably rare in the kitesurfing world: warm, flat, waist-deep water that stretches for over 200 meters in every direction. There are no rocks hiding beneath the surface, no currents pulling you off course, and no deep channels to worry about. For first-time kiters, wing foil students, and anyone rebuilding confidence after time away from the sport, La Lagune removes every variable except the one that matters: learning.

Conditions & Best Time

La Lagune receives the same reliable side-shore wind that powers the entire Dakhla lagoon, typically between 15 and 25 knots. What makes this spot uniquely suited for learning is that the water stays shallow regardless of the tide. While Speed Spot next door changes character dramatically between high and low water, La Lagune maintains its waist-deep, sandy-bottom profile throughout the tidal cycle. You can stand up after every fall, relaunch your kite with your feet planted, and walk back to your starting position if needed.

The peak season runs from April to September when the trade winds blow most consistently, but La Lagune is genuinely a year-round spot. Even during the winter months from October to March, there are frequent wind days in the lagoon, and the water temperature rarely drops below 19 degrees. The soft sand bottom means you never have to worry about stepping on anything sharp, and the absence of current makes body dragging exercises safe and predictable.

  • Wind: Side-shore, 15–25 knots
  • Water: Flat, waist-deep for 200+ meters
  • Bottom: Soft sand
  • Best tide: Any tide (always shallow)
  • Best months: Year-round, peak April to September
  • Water temperature: 19–23°C

Who Should Ride Here?

La Lagune is designed by nature for all levels, but it truly shines as a beginner and early-intermediate spot. If you have never flown a kite before, this is the place to start. If you are working on your first body drags, your waterstart, or your first upwind rides, the waist-deep water provides a safety net that accelerates learning dramatically. Students progress faster here because they spend less time swimming and more time practicing.

Wing foil beginners find La Lagune especially valuable. Learning to balance on a foil board while managing a wing is challenging enough without adding depth, current, and chop to the equation. Here, every fall is a gentle splash in knee-to-waist deep water, and you can stand right back up on the sand to reset. The flat surface also makes it easier to spot the moment when the foil lifts, helping you develop the feel for flight sooner.

Even experienced riders enjoy La Lagune for warm-up sessions or mellow sunset rides. The vibe here is relaxed and welcoming. It is common to see complete beginners flying their first trainer kites alongside advanced riders working on new wing foil moves, all sharing the same stretch of glassy water.

How to Get There

La Lagune shares the same access road as Speed Spot, about 25 kilometers south of Dakhla town along the lagoon road. The drive takes roughly 30 minutes from the center of town. The spot is located right next to several of the lagoon-side camps and accommodations that cater to kitesurfers, so if you are staying at one of these camps, you may be able to walk to the water in minutes.

For ProKite Coaching coaching sessions, Amine and the team arrange transport from Dakhla town to the lagoon. The meeting point is the PK25 area, clearly marked and well known to every taxi and transfer driver in the region. All coaching equipment, including kites, boards, harnesses, and wetsuits, is provided at the spot so you do not need to bring anything except sunscreen and a willingness to learn.

Our Coaching at La Lagune

La Lagune is where every new ProKite Coaching student takes their first steps. Amine has been teaching beginners on this water for over two decades, and his method is built around the specific advantages this spot provides. The shallow, standing-depth water means he can be right next to you during your first kite flights, guiding your bar input in real time rather than shouting instructions from the beach. That physical proximity makes corrections instant and confidence-building immediate.

The coaching progression at La Lagune follows a clear path: kite control on the beach, then body dragging in the shallows, then waterstart practice, and finally your first upwind rides. Each stage benefits from the predictable conditions. There are no surprises at La Lagune, no sudden gusts funneling through a gap, no unexpected depth changes, and no currents to fight. This predictability lets Amine focus entirely on your technique rather than managing safety variables.

Wing foil coaching at La Lagune has become increasingly popular. Amine introduces students to foiling in the shallowest sections where the wing catches wind perfectly and falls are nothing more than a gentle sit-down in warm water. Most students achieve their first sustained foil flights within the first two sessions here, a timeline that would be much longer at a deeper, choppier spot.
