Speed Spot — Dakhla's Flat Water Freestyle Mecca

Speed Spot — Dakhla's Flat Water Freestyle Mecca
Flat Water Intermediate–Advanced Freestyle

Speed Spot is the crown jewel of the Dakhla lagoon for any kitesurfer serious about flat water progression. Located roughly 25 kilometers south of Dakhla town along the lagoon road, this stretch of water transforms at low tide into one of the smoothest riding surfaces you will find anywhere in the world. A natural sandbank rises just beneath the surface, creating ankle-to-knee deep water that stretches for hundreds of meters. The result is a mirror-flat playground where every pop, every rotation, and every handle pass attempt happens on water so smooth it feels forgiving. For intermediate and advanced riders chasing freestyle milestones, Speed Spot is where breakthroughs happen.

Conditions & Best Time

Speed Spot benefits from the consistent side-shore NNE trade wind that defines the Dakhla lagoon. Wind strength typically ranges from 18 to 25 knots, delivering reliable power through the core season from April to September. The trade wind blows almost daily during these months, making it one of the most dependable kitesurfing destinations on the planet.

The water is flat to butter-flat depending on the tide. At low tide, particularly about two hours before the lowest point, the sandbank fully reveals itself and the water becomes impossibly shallow and smooth. This is the golden window for freestyle sessions. The bottom is entirely sand, so wipeouts are soft and gear-friendly. Water temperature hovers between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius through the season, comfortable enough for a shorty or thin wetsuit.

  • Wind: Side-shore NNE trade wind, 18–25 knots
  • Water: Flat, ankle-to-knee deep at low tide on the sandbank
  • Bottom: Sand
  • Best tide: Low tide (2 hours before the lowest point)
  • Best months: April to September
  • Water temperature: 19–23°C

Who Should Ride Here?

Speed Spot is built for intermediate to advanced riders who already have solid board control and want to push into new territory. If you can ride upwind comfortably and are ready to start landing your first jumps, transitions, or powered tricks, this is your training ground.

Freestyle is king at Speed Spot. The flat water and consistent wind make it the ideal laboratory for backrolls, kite loops, handle passes, board-offs, and darkslides. Speed runs are equally popular given the open, unobstructed water. Riders working on flat tricks like raleys, s-bends, and slim chances will find the conditions perfectly suited to repeated attempts without fatigue from chop or current.

This is not a beginner spot. The shallow water and sandbank can be deceptive for inexperienced riders who might not read the tidal changes. Beginners should start at La Lagune nearby, where the water stays consistently waist-deep and forgiving at all tides.

How to Get There

Speed Spot sits approximately 25 kilometers south of Dakhla town, along the main lagoon road that runs down the peninsula. The drive takes about 30 minutes on a paved road before turning off toward the waterfront. You can drive yourself if you have a rental vehicle, or ProKite Coaching arranges daily transfers for coaching students.

The meeting point for coaching sessions is the PK25 area, a well-known reference point along the lagoon. Amine and the PKC team meet students here with all equipment ready. If you are staying at one of the lagoon camps nearby, Speed Spot is within walking distance. For those based in Dakhla town, the transfer is part of the coaching experience.

Our Coaching at Speed Spot

Speed Spot is where Amine Roussafi does his best freestyle coaching work. With over 20 years of experience teaching on this exact stretch of water, he knows every sandbank contour, every tidal shift, and exactly when the conditions peak for specific tricks. This is not generic coaching in a nice location. This is precision instruction designed around the spot itself.

Video analysis is a core part of every session here. The flat water means the camera captures clean footage without spray or chop obscuring your body position. Amine films every attempt, reviews it with you between runs, and gives technique adjustments that produce immediate results. Students regularly report landing tricks they have been chasing for months within a single session at Speed Spot.

Handle passes and board-offs are Amine's specialty here. The shallow, flat water reduces the fear factor dramatically, letting you commit fully to rotations and passes that feel intimidating in deeper or choppier conditions. When your brain trusts the landing surface, your body follows. That mental shift, combined with Amine's eye for micro-adjustments, is why Speed Spot produces so many personal bests.
