White Dune (Dune Blanche) — Dakhla's Iconic Downwind Destination

White Dune (Dune Blanche) — Dakhla's Iconic Downwind Destination
Flat Water All Levels Downwind

White Dune, known locally as Dune Blanche, is the single most photographed and talked-about location on the Dakhla lagoon. Situated roughly 35 kilometers south of Dakhla town and 13 kilometers beyond the main lagoon spots, it sits at the far southern tip of the kiting zone where a massive white Saharan sand dune rises dramatically from the lagoon shore. The water here is an almost unreal shade of turquoise, the bottom is pure sand, and the combination of desert and ocean creates a landscape that feels entirely otherworldly. Despite what many travel blogs suggest, White Dune is flat water, not a wave spot. The lagoon shelters it completely from Atlantic swell, leaving a surface that ranges from glass-flat to light chop depending on wind strength. Getting here is part of the adventure, and riding here is something you will remember long after you leave Dakhla.

Conditions & Best Time

White Dune receives the same side-shore trade wind as the rest of the lagoon, though conditions here can be slightly gustier due to the narrowing of the lagoon and the thermal effects of the surrounding desert sand. The wind tends to accelerate in the afternoon as the dune heats up, creating a natural thermal boost that can push gusts above the 20-knot range even on moderate wind days further north.

The water is flat to light chop with a stunning turquoise color created by the shallow sandy bottom reflecting sunlight. At low to mid tide, the depth is manageable and the riding surface is at its smoothest. High tide brings slightly deeper water and a bit more texture, but it remains lagoon-flat compared to any ocean spot. Water temperature ranges from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius through the main season, and the air temperature at the dune is typically several degrees warmer than the main lagoon area due to heat radiating off the sand.

  • Wind: Side-shore, gustier than main lagoon
  • Water: Flat to light chop, turquoise
  • Bottom: Sand
  • Best tide: Low to mid tide
  • Best months: April to September
  • Water temperature: 19–22°C

Who Should Ride Here?

White Dune is for advanced riders. The remoteness alone demands experience: if something goes wrong 13 kilometers from the main launch, you need to be self-sufficient. The journey to White Dune, whether by downwinder or 4x4, requires riders who can handle changing conditions, read the water, and manage gear independently. This is not about the difficulty of the water itself, which is flat and friendly, but about the commitment level of getting there and back.

Strapless riding is particularly rewarding at White Dune. The turquoise water and dramatic dune backdrop make this the ultimate setting for surfboard-style kiting, and many riders come specifically for the photographic opportunities. Downwinders from the main lagoon to White Dune are one of the signature experiences of any Dakhla trip, covering 13 kilometers of ever-changing lagoon scenery with the white dune growing on the horizon as you ride south.

Photography and videography crews frequently use White Dune as a shoot location. If you are building a kite edit or simply want the most stunning backdrop possible for your riding footage, there is no better spot in Dakhla and arguably few better spots anywhere in the world.

How to Get There

White Dune is approximately 35 kilometers south of Dakhla town, accessible by two routes. The first and most popular for kitesurfers is the downwinder: launching from the main lagoon spots around PK25 and riding 13 kilometers south with the wind until the white dune appears. This is a one-way ride, so you will need a 4x4 pickup waiting at the dune to bring you and your gear back. ProKite Coaching organizes these logistics as part of the downwinder experience.

The second option is a 4x4 excursion directly to the dune. The track beyond the paved lagoon road is sandy and requires a capable off-road vehicle. Regular cars cannot make the drive. ProKite Coaching arranges 4x4 transfers for riders who want to session at White Dune without the downwinder commitment, and the drive itself is a stunning journey through raw Saharan landscape.

Our Coaching at White Dune

Amine organizes downwinder sessions to White Dune as the capstone experience for advanced riders during their coaching week. The 13-kilometer ride is itself a masterclass in reading changing lagoon conditions. As you travel south, the water depth shifts, the wind texture changes, and the landscape transforms from scrubby coastline to pure desert. Amine rides alongside you, pointing out subtle changes in the water that signal depth variations, wind shifts, and the best lines to maintain speed and safety.

Once at the dune, sessions focus on whatever discipline the rider chooses. Strapless riding in the turquoise shallows, freestyle on the flat water patches, or simply free-riding with the most extraordinary scenery in North African kitesurfing behind you. Amine uses these sessions for action photography and video too, capturing footage with the white dune as a backdrop that his students take home as both a coaching tool and a lasting memory of their Dakhla trip.

The White Dune experience is about more than technique. It is about understanding what makes Dakhla special: the raw intersection of Saharan desert and Atlantic wind that creates conditions found nowhere else. For riders who want to understand this place deeply, not just ride on it, the downwinder to White Dune is an essential day.
