Dragon Island — Dakhla's Wind-Accelerated Lagoon Sandbar

Dragon Island — Dakhla's Wind-Accelerated Lagoon Sandbar
Flat Water Intermediate Wind Funnel

Dragon Island is one of the most visually striking kitesurf locations in Dakhla. Sitting roughly 30 kilometers south of town in the heart of the lagoon, this elongated sandbar earns its name from the unmistakable dragon-like shape it traces across the water. From above, the narrow body curves gently before tapering to a pointed tip where the wind funnels and accelerates, creating a natural wind tunnel that experienced intermediate riders find irresistible. On either side of the sandbar, the water is shallow, warm, and impossibly flat. It is a playground that looks like it was designed for kitesurfing, and in many ways the geography makes it exactly that. For riders who have graduated from beginner lessons at the main lagoon and are ready for something more dynamic, Dragon Island is the next step in their progression.

Conditions & Best Time

The defining feature of Dragon Island is its wind acceleration. The prevailing side-shore trade winds hit the sandbar and funnel around the tip, compressing the airflow and creating a noticeable increase in wind speed. On a day when the main lagoon registers a comfortable 18 knots, the tip of Dragon Island can see gusts reaching 25 knots or more. This acceleration is predictable and consistent during the main season from April through September, which makes it an excellent training ground for riders learning to handle stronger wind without traveling to an entirely different spot.

The water on both sides of the sandbar remains flat and shallow throughout the tidal cycle, though conditions are best at low to mid tide when the sandbar is most exposed and the water depth on either side ranges from knee-deep to waist-deep. This shallow depth means that riders can stand up after a crash almost anywhere, which removes the anxiety that comes with practicing new tricks over deep water. The bottom is clean sand with no rocks, reef, or obstructions. It is as forgiving an environment as you will find for the wind speeds available.

Water temperature from April through September hovers between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius. Most riders are comfortable in a shorty wetsuit or even just a rashguard on the warmer days. The air temperature is consistently warm, and the combination of sunshine, flat water, and steady wind makes for sessions that can stretch well beyond two hours without fatigue setting in.

  • Wind: Side-shore, accelerated around the tip, 18–25 kts
  • Water: Flat, shallow on both sides
  • Bottom: Sand
  • Best tide: Low to mid tide
  • Best months: April to September
  • Water temperature: 20–23°C

Who Should Ride Here?

Dragon Island is built for intermediate riders who are past the fundamentals and hungry for progression. If you can ride upwind consistently, perform basic transitions, and manage your kite confidently in moderate wind, this is the spot that will push you to the next level. The wind acceleration around the tip adds a new variable to work with, teaching riders how to adjust their kite position and edge angle as wind speed changes within a single run. This is a critical skill for any rider looking to progress beyond intermediate level.

The primary disciplines at Dragon Island are freestyle progression, speed runs, and flat tricks. The shallow flat water on both sides of the sandbar provides ideal conditions for practicing jumps, board-offs, and rotations with the confidence that a crash will not result in a deep-water recovery situation. The acceleration zone at the tip is perfect for speed runs, where riders can practice maintaining control and technique at higher velocities. Many riders who come to Dragon Island for the first time are surprised by how much their riding improves in just a few sessions, because the spot naturally encourages commitment to maneuvers that they would hesitate to try in deeper or choppier water.

Beginners should not come to Dragon Island unsupervised. While the shallow water is forgiving, the wind acceleration at the tip can overpower an inexperienced rider, and the distance from shore means that self-rescue requires either a long body drag or a boat pickup. Riders with solid intermediate skills, however, will find this spot to be one of the most productive training environments in the entire Dakhla lagoon system.

How to Get There

Dragon Island sits approximately 30 kilometers south of Dakhla town, out in the middle of the lagoon. Unlike most spots along the shoreline, you cannot simply drive to Dragon Island and walk to the water. Access is by boat or by downwinder from the main lagoon. ProKite Coaching organizes boat transfers for coached sessions, departing from the lagoon shore and arriving at the sandbar within 20 to 30 minutes depending on conditions. The boat drops riders on the sandbar and returns at the end of the session.

For more experienced riders, Dragon Island also serves as a destination point on longer downwinder runs. Starting from a launch point further north in the lagoon, riders can kite downwind to the island, session at the tip, and then either continue south or catch a boat back. This makes it part of the larger adventure offerings that ProKite Coaching provides. There are no facilities on the island itself, so bring water and sun protection. Amine ensures all equipment and safety gear are transported by boat for every coached session.

Our Coaching at Dragon Island

Amine uses the wind acceleration around Dragon Island's tip for speed-focused sessions that push intermediate riders beyond their comfort zone in a controlled way. The approach is methodical. Sessions begin on the calmer side of the sandbar, where riders warm up in moderate wind and flat water, reviewing their stance, edge control, and kite positioning. Once warmed up, riders move progressively closer to the tip, where the wind funnels and intensifies. This gradual increase allows riders to feel the changes in real time and adapt their technique as the conditions shift beneath them.

The shallow water on both sides of the sandbar provides a crucial safety margin. When riders push into new territory, whether it is a faster speed run, a higher jump, or a more committed rotation, they know that a mistake means standing up in waist-deep water rather than swimming in deep lagoon. This changes the psychology of progression. Riders commit more fully to tricks and take calculated risks that they might avoid elsewhere. Amine exploits this dynamic deliberately, encouraging riders to attempt maneuvers they have been hesitant about and providing immediate feedback on technique.

Dragon Island sessions are typically half-day outings that include the boat transfer, a thorough briefing on the sandbar itself, two to three hours of riding, and a debrief on the return journey. Amine films key runs from the sandbar and reviews the footage with students, breaking down body position, kite timing, and board angle. The combination of a unique environment, accelerated wind, and detailed video analysis makes Dragon Island one of the most effective coaching locations in the ProKite Coaching program.
