Secret Spot — Dakhla's Hidden Flat-Water Paradise

Secret Spot — Dakhla's Hidden Flat-Water Paradise
Flat Water Intermediate April — September

Every kitesurfing destination has its overcrowded flagship spots and its quiet corners that only the locals know about. In Dakhla, Secret Spot is that quiet corner. Tucked along a stretch of the lagoon that sees a fraction of the traffic of PK25 or Speed Spot, this place offers something increasingly rare in the kitesurfing world: space. Uninterrupted, empty, flat water stretching out in every direction. No dodging other riders' lines, no competing for upwind ground, no tangled kites on a packed beach. The name is tongue-in-cheek at this point — plenty of people have heard of it — but the extra 30-minute drive south keeps the casual crowd away. Those who make the effort are rewarded with some of the best conditions on the entire lagoon.

Conditions & Best Time

Secret Spot delivers classic Dakhla lagoon conditions: flat water over a sandy bottom with side-shore wind. What sets it apart from the more popular lagoon spots is the wind quality. Positioned further south along the peninsula, the thermal effect is slightly amplified here, with wind speeds consistently ranging from 18 to 25 knots. The gusts are fewer and the wind feels smoother — likely because there is less turbulence from nearby structures or terrain features that affect spots closer to town.

The prime season at Secret Spot runs from April through September, coinciding with the strongest and most consistent trade wind period. During these months you can expect rideable conditions on the vast majority of days. Water temperature stays between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius, comfortable for long sessions in a shorty or even boardshorts on the warmest days. The sandy bottom extends well offshore, and the lagoon here is uniformly shallow — knee to waist-deep for a good distance. Tide has minimal impact on the conditions, making session planning straightforward.

  • Wind: Side-shore, 18–25 knots
  • Water: Flat, knee to waist-deep
  • Bottom: Sand
  • Best tide: Any tide (minimal tide impact)
  • Best months: April to September
  • Water temperature: 20–23°C

Who Should Ride Here?

Secret Spot is ideal for intermediate riders who can ride upwind independently and are working on their next skills. If you are at the stage where you want to practice transitions, your first jumps, or the foundations of freestyle, this is a dream setup. The empty water means you can set up long runs without worrying about right-of-way conflicts. You can fall, recover, and try again without feeling self-conscious about holding up more experienced riders behind you.

The spot also works beautifully for riders at the upper intermediate to advanced level who want uninterrupted flat-water practice for freestyle progression. When you are drilling handlepass attempts or working on powered kite loops, having an empty stretch of water to yourself is invaluable — you can focus entirely on your technique without the distraction of traffic. Beginners could technically ride here, but the longer drive and lack of nearby facilities make PK25 a more practical choice for first-timers.

How to Get There

Secret Spot is located approximately 32 kilometers south of Dakhla town. The first portion of the journey follows the paved lagoon road — the same one that leads to PK25. Beyond the main kite school area, the road continues south but eventually transitions to unpaved track. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, though experienced drivers have made it in standard vehicles during dry conditions. The alternative route is by water — Secret Spot is a popular endpoint for downwinder sessions starting from PK25 or other spots further north, which adds a sense of adventure to the journey.

Allow 40 to 50 minutes for the drive from town. There are no shops, restaurants, or facilities at the spot itself, so pack lunch, plenty of water, and all the gear you will need for the day. The isolation is part of the charm, but it also means you need to be self-sufficient.

Our Coaching at Secret Spot

Amine brings students to Secret Spot when the main lagoon spots are crowded, or when a rider's progression needs focused, uninterrupted practice time. The uncrowded conditions make it an ideal classroom for intermediate coaching sessions — there are no distractions, no right-of-way worries, and plenty of space for setting up drills. Amine can position himself on the water with a clear view of your entire run, providing radio coaching that would be difficult at a busier spot where multiple riders cross the teaching zone.

Sessions here typically focus on building consistency in transitions and riding technique, developing the timing for first jumps, or progressing into freestyle basics. The flat water and reliable wind remove the environmental variables that can slow progression at less consistent spots. Video analysis at Secret Spot is particularly effective because the clean background and empty water make it easy to isolate exactly what your body, board, and kite are doing at every moment. Many of Amine's students describe their Secret Spot sessions as breakthrough days — the kind where everything clicks because conditions and coaching are both dialed in.
